One of the most rewarding edible plants you can grow in a warm climate — a compact tropical shrub that produces bright red, tart cherries packed with more vitamin C than almost any other fruit.

The Barbados Cherry (Malpighia emarginata) is a compact tropical shrub that blooms and fruits simultaneously during the growing season — so you'll have delicate pink flowers and vivid red cherries on the plant at the same time. The flavor is bright and acidic rather than sweet, with a soft skin that ripens quickly from green to vivid red. Rich in vitamin C, the fruit is delicious fresh or used in jams, jellies, and syrups. Expect fruit within about two years. At 4–6 feet tall, it's ideal for small gardens, large containers, or privacy screens.

What I love about it

The Barbados Cherry is the edible plant that earns its spot in the garden on looks alone — and then rewards you with fruit that's genuinely nutritious and delicious. The simultaneous blooming and fruiting is a beautiful quality: delicate pink flowers and vivid red cherries on the same plant at the same time. It's drought-tolerant once established, handles brief cold snaps, and often regenerates from roots if frozen. Prune above a node to encourage branching and more fruit. One of the best edible shrubs for warm-climate gardeners.

Plant Care Tips

  • ☀️ Light: Full sun for best fruit production; tolerates partial shade
  • 💧 Water: 2–3x per week while establishing; drought-tolerant once mature
  • 🌡️ Cold Hardiness: Handles brief dips to 28°F; often regenerates from roots if frozen
  • 🪴 Difficulty: Easy once established
  • 🐾 Pet Safety: Non-toxic to cats and dogs
  • ✂️ Pruning: Prune above a node to encourage branching and more fruit
