Carried to California by Franciscan missionaries in the 1700s, the Black Mission fig has earned its place over centuries. The teardrop fruit ripens to a near-black purple with a soft, syrupy interior and a rich, raisin-sweet depth that intensifies when dried. Eat it warm off the branch, halved on a cheese board with burrata, baked into a tart, or turned into preserves that'll ruin store-bought jam for you forever.
