Creamy white-edged foliage all season, brilliant red stems in winter — the Ivory Halo® is a four-season shrub that earns its spot in any landscape.

Ivory Halo® Dogwood (Cornus alba 'Bailhalo') is a compact, variegated selection of the red-twig dogwood, prized for its striking two-toned foliage and vivid winter stem color. The leaves are a clean, medium green edged in creamy white — bright and fresh-looking all season long. In fall they turn reddish-purple before dropping to reveal the real winter show: a dense thicket of bright red stems that glow against snow, gray skies, and bare winter landscapes. At 4–5 feet tall and wide, it's a well-behaved, manageable size that fits foundation plantings, mixed borders, and rain gardens.

What I love about it

Ivory Halo is the shrub that looks good when nothing else does. The variegated foliage is clean and bright through the growing season, the fall color is a nice bonus, and then the red stems take over in winter and carry the garden through the coldest months. It's one of the few shrubs that's genuinely more interesting in January than in July. It tolerates wet soils, is cold-hardy to Zone 2, and grows at a moderate pace that's easy to manage. Plant it where the winter stems can be seen from inside the house — that's the whole point.

Plant Care Tips

  • ☀️ Light: Full sun to part shade — best stem color in full sun
  • 💧 Water: Consistently moist; tolerates wet and boggy soils
  • 🌡️ Temperature: Hardy to -50°F (Zone 2); extremely cold-tolerant
  • 🪴 Difficulty: Easy — adaptable and low-maintenance
  • 🐾 Pet Safety: Non-toxic to cats and dogs
  • ✂️ Pruning: Cut back hard every 2–3 years in early spring for the brightest stem color
