Jewel Orchid (Ludisia Discolor)

Most orchids make you work for the flowers. The Jewel Orchid makes you forget flowers exist entirely. Ludisia discolor is grown for its foliage — deep, velvety leaves traced with fine gold or red veining that catches the light like fabric. It's one of the most striking houseplants you can own, and it genuinely thrives in the low-light spots where most plants give up. Once a year, usually in winter or early spring, it surprises you with tall spikes of delicate white blooms. Consider it a bonus.

• Light: Low to medium indirect — one of the best true low-light plants available
• Water: Keep soil consistently moist but never soggy — water when the top inch feels dry
• Humidity: Loves it — mist regularly, use a humidity tray, or place near a humidifier
• Blooms: White flower spikes once a year in winter/early spring — a beautiful surprise on top of already stunning foliage
• Growth: Spreads slowly over time; mature plants produce multiple growths and flowering spikes
