LECA Balls – Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate
The semi-hydroponic growing medium that plant enthusiasts swear by — LECA gives roots the perfect balance of moisture, oxygen, and stability.
LECA (Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate) is a porous, pH-neutral growing medium made from expanded clay balls. Each ball is riddled with tiny air pockets that hold moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely — giving roots the oxygen they need to thrive without the risk of root rot. LECA is reusable, easy to clean, and works beautifully for semi-hydroponic growing, as a soil amendment to improve drainage, or as a drainage layer at the bottom of pots.
What I love about it
LECA is the growing medium that converts skeptics. Once you see how healthy roots grow in it — white, firm, and actively reaching — it's hard to go back to dense potting mixes for certain plants. It's especially effective for aroids, orchids, and other plants that are prone to root rot in conventional soil. The reusability is a genuine advantage: rinse, sterilize, and reuse indefinitely. It's also a great drainage layer at the bottom of pots without a drainage hole, or mixed into chunky potting mixes to improve aeration. A staple for serious houseplant growers.
