A small but mighty carnivorous plant with oval, sticky leaves that trap insects and delicate trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom in pink, white, or purple.

The Pinguicula primuliflora (Butterwort) is a small perennial carnivorous herb with oval, fleshy, glossy green leaves covered in tiny sticky glands that attract, trap, and digest insects. The leaves are 2–5 cm long and have a slightly shiny appearance that gives the plant a vibrant, healthy look. In spring and summer, it produces beautiful pink, white, or purple trumpet-shaped flowers held above the leaves on tall, slender stems — a delicate and beautiful bonus to an already fascinating plant. Flowers are not guaranteed; if the flower stem arrives broken, trim it and a new one will grow with proper care.

What I love about it

The Butterwort is the carnivorous plant that surprises people. It doesn't look dangerous — the leaves are small, oval, and glossy, and the flowers are genuinely pretty. But those sticky glands are quietly effective at trapping fungus gnats and other small insects, making it a beautiful and functional addition to any plant shelf. It's also one of the easier carnivorous plants to keep: bright indirect light, moist soil, and distilled or rainwater. The flowers can appear annually or even multiple times a year in ideal conditions.

Plant Care Tips

  • ☀️ Light: Bright indirect sunlight
  • 💧 Water: Keep soil moist but not waterlogged; use distilled or rainwater only
  • 🧪 Soil: Well-draining, nutrient-poor mix — sphagnum moss recommended
  • 💧 Humidity: Prefers humid conditions
  • 🦍 Feeding: No need to feed — catches its own small insects naturally
  • 🐾 Pet Safety: Non-toxic to cats and dogs
  • 🪴 Difficulty: Easy — great for beginners to carnivorous plants
