Shenandoah Switch Grass (Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah') is a compact, upright native grass prized for its extraordinary fall color. The fine, blue-green foliage begins turning red at the tips in midsummer, deepening to a rich, saturated red-burgundy by fall that's unlike anything else in the ornamental grass world. Airy, pinkish-red plumes appear in late summer, adding a soft, hazy texture above the foliage. At 3–4 feet tall it's a well-behaved, manageable size that works in mixed borders, rain gardens, naturalistic plantings, and mass plantings for maximum fall impact.
