Meet the plant that will make your guests do a double-take — and then back away slowly. The Stapelia Gigantea, known as the Zulu Giant or Carrion Flower, is a spineless, cactus-like succulent from the milkweed family that produces one of the most dramatic blooms in the plant world: a massive, star-shaped flower that can reach up to 12 inches across, patterned in deep burgundy and pale yellow, covered in fine hairs. It's genuinely stunning. It also smells like rotting meat. On purpose. The plant evolved to attract flies for pollination, and it works brilliantly. The smell fades quickly after blooming, and what you're left with is a conversation piece unlike anything else on your shelf.

What I love about it:

  • Light: Bright indirect to full sun — the more light, the more likely it blooms
  • Water: Drought-tolerant — water sparingly; let soil dry completely between waterings
  • Blooms: Massive star-shaped flowers up to 12" across in spring/summer — burgundy, hairy, and unforgettable
  • The smell: Yes, it smells like carrion when blooming — briefly, and only to attract flies; it fades fast
  • Family: Milkweed (Apocynaceae) — not a true cactus, but cares for like one
  • Difficulty: Easy — neglect-tolerant and endlessly fascinating

Bloom bold. Be cheeky.
