The Peruvian Apple Cactus is one of the most architectural cacti you can grow indoors — tall, columnar, and deeply ribbed, it looks like it belongs in a desert landscape painting. What makes it genuinely special is its blooming habit: large, creamy white flowers open after dark and close by morning, making each bloom a fleeting event worth staying up for. Mature plants also produce edible red fruit (the "apple"), though that takes years of growth to achieve.
It's fast-growing for a cactus, tolerates a range of conditions, and requires almost no maintenance beyond the occasional deep watering. A statement plant that earns its space.
What I love about it:
- Light: Full sun to bright indirect — the more sun, the faster it grows
- Water: Every 2–3 weeks indoors; water deeply, then let soil dry completely
- Blooms: Nocturnal — large white flowers open at night and close by morning; typically blooms on mature plants
- Growth: Fast for a cactus — can reach several feet tall indoors over time
- Pet safety: Non-toxic, but spines are sharp — handle with care
- Difficulty: Easy — drought-tolerant and forgiving
Bloom bold. Be cheeky.
