Variegated Opuntia Prickly Pear Cactus

The Variegated Opuntia is the Prickly Pear's showier sibling — same flat, paddle-shaped pads, same easygoing attitude, but with a striking cream-and-green variegation that makes each pad look like it was hand-painted. No two plants look exactly alike, and the coloring shifts with light and season. It's architectural, low-maintenance, and genuinely one of the most visually interesting cacti you can keep on a windowsill.

What I love about it:

• Light: Full sun to bright indirect — the more light, the more vivid the variegation
• Water: Drought-tolerant — water thoroughly, then let soil dry out completely; every 2–3 weeks indoors
• Growth: Fast for a cactus — new variegated pads appear regularly in the growing season
• Glochids: The tiny hair-like spines are the real hazard — handle with tongs or thick gloves, not bare hands
• Pet safety: Non-toxic if touched, but the sap can irritate skin; keep away from pets who might chew it
• Difficulty: Beginner-friendly — thrives on neglect as long as you don't overwater
